How to Get Rid of Red Hair Dye

  • I'm in an awful situation where I'm not sure what to do to my hair to get it back to say 'a clean canvas'.

I'm naturally a dirty blonde and I dyed my hair red with XXL Real Red, which turned out a fantastic colour, but just like red is best at doing is fading, fast. So I re-dyed. I've re-dyed my hair red 4 times now and it just became a darker dull red, not the Little Mermaid red like I did have. So I decided to leave it to fade more and wash it out more before re-dying. But it's got to the point where it doesn't seem to be fading anymore. Due to it being a permanent dye cry

So now I want to have a clean canvas, as I really want to do something similar like Jude did to Adam in adventure #27 Blue contrast (http://haircrazy.info/adams/27-blue-contrast/) except I'd want a more pink/red instead of an orange/red or maybe a lilac... Not sure yet. Anyway my main concern is how hell do I get rid of this horrible red. I know I'd have to bleach and/or strip. But I'm not sure what to do :/

Before I dyed my hair red I bleached my hair, but my hair was almost all natural, in the picture is me on my 19th that was this year in the first week of Feb, since then (and before red) it has grown 5 inches and been cut (fringe, layers and above shoulders). Then I dyed it red, and then it's been cut again, so I'm pretty sure all the bleach is out, so my hair shouldn't be destroyed if I bleach, right? :/

I just want some advise on what I can do to get a clean canvas, what others have done if they have been in my situation. Due to being a student and having no job what so ever, I wont be going to the salon to get them to do it and I'd need to do this as cheap as chips grin

Thank you all for reading wink

    • I know the flash makes it more red but it wasn't far off from that colour

  • first of all, do vitamin C treatments ( http://haircrazy.info/misc-articles/how-to-remove-dye-with-a-vitamin-c-treatment/ )

they work best on read har from what i niticed an read on the site, pause a fev days between, because it drys your hair a little bit , but you can fix it with conditioning well... see how much of the red you can get out with that, befor risking to destroi your hair unnecessary with bleaching good luck :)

  • I've had pretty good results from a color remover called "Color Oops!" There are a ton of brands that you can choose from though. They work a little better than the Vit. C treatments. Try to find one that doesn't use bleach. Hope that helps some.

  • As above, try a colour remover before bleaching at all.

  • there's an article on here about fading dyes quicker. have a read of that x

Thanks for this, I've brought Vitamin C today, so I'm just going to try it. If this doesn't work then I'll try a colour stripper/remover, but I'll have to wait till I get paid.

Yeah I've read that, and I've tried what is suggested. But this dye is stubborn frowning

  • Just wanted to reiterate what the others said. Try to fade it, then try a colour remover and then try bleach as a last resort. Do strand tests before each stage of colour remover and bleach. Those XXL dyes are quite strong so you need to worry about damage.

You can do the Vitamin C thing a few times. I've just done 5 treatments in 2 weeks. My hair has not been damaged at all. Just follow with a good conditioner because it leaves your hair squeaky clean.

As for the red, if you have to keep it, I'd avoid using the XXL over the top each time. You can refresh the colour with something like Directions Pillarbox red which will add pigment back in without doing any damage to your hair.

If you're in the UK you won't be able to find Color Oops but you could try Colour B4 instead which is a similar product. You can buy it in Boots.

  • I've just used the Vitamin C wash. I used 2 tablet (1000mg) crushed to powder with the usual amount of shampoo I use and left on for about 2 hours maybe less. It looks so much better it's lighter and more orangey, I quite like it, But I'm planning to do more of the Vitamin C wash because I want dye my hair like I said in my post grin

Once I've done that if it's not light enough, then I'll use a colour remover like you said. Then if that doesn't make it light enough for what I want to do, then I guess I'm going to have to bleach it.

Thank you for all of your advice, I guess I'm just going to have to keep doing what I'm doing and see what happens x

  • Hey, I just wanted to post some advice, too (: This is my first time posting anything here and I'm German, so English isn't my first language. Please forgive any mistakes I might make.

We had exactly the same problem - I used the XXL dye, too. I found that the second Vitamin C treatment didn't fade it much more from the orange I achieved with the first one, but I'd like to recommend a dye for you :'D

If you really want more of a pinkish red, you really should try Directions 'Poppy Red'. It came out a really bright pink-toned red on my hair and our colours seem to be quite similar. We even have a really similar 'hair history' xD

Oh okay grin Thank you that dye sounds really nice, I shall have to try it. May I ask did you put the poppy red dye on top off the orangey hair or did you manage to get rid of the orangey hair before putting on the poppy red?

  • I put it over the orangey hair, because I couldn't get it that much lighter anymore. I don't know how light your hair is, but after I left the Directions Poppy Red on for five hours, my hair came out pretty bright (:

are u acutally been serious 5hr's wif d dye n ur hair mad woman NEVER!!!! how u plannin on doin ur root's??

Love learning new stuff n question's myself alot!!! dnt belive u can complete hairdressing without a placement!

  • I had roots when I put the color on and they turned out just fine, they look like the rest of the hair does. Actually, I don't see what makes me so mad in your eyes, because the dye didn't really damage my hair and the colour and the roots are good. My other option would have been bleaching beforehand and I don't see how that could have been so much better for my hair.
