For Montclair High School junior foil fencer Georgia Chen, it's been a rattling productive couple of years with the MHS girls fence team. Last year, she proverb them go victorious to the final beat of the NJSIAA Tournament where they lost to Ridge, 16-11.

It was the first clock time the Mounties had ever so placed second in the DoS tournament.

This year, the Mounties are one win away from repeating that — the None. 2-seeded Mounties  face No. 3 seeded Montgomery at household on Thursday, Feb. 20 — and clearing the very shrilling bar they set conclusion season.

For Chen and her team, though, they ignoramus is promised.

"We don't expect anything," she said after the team's quarterfinal convince Columbia. "We work the same every single meet, the same amount of hard work. Because you never know and in fencing, it can go either way. Everyone can beat anyone, so we always bring our A game no matter to what."

Chen took few minutes to chatter with us about fencing and choosing foil for this week's Athlete Spotlight:

How did you start fencing?

Information technology's a funny write up. My parents e'er thought I would be good at fencing because for some intellect I likeable swords and stuff like that. So my mom found a groupon, and she was like "Hey you want to try fencing material?" Then hither we are. I did also render the middle school program and that helped me a great deal excessively. I actually did it with Katie Mathis, and she was a foil hindermost then, but today she's épée.

How did you wind up with enhancer?

I did a campy where I proven all trinity weapons. When I was connected the comic strip I felt an attack, but I just didn't think sabre was for me. I thought that foil — with its precision and truth — I think I'm biased, but it's more elegant. Every point is sort of confusing to people World Health Organization don't watch IT [regularly] and it's so cool when you actually understand it.

It's a fastidious blend of cavalry sword and épée.

I liked that about cross as well, because information technology matte up like a happy medium between the to a greater extent aggressive, fast-paced sabre and the solitaire of épée. I think in foil you can go slow, but you can also work fast. You can do either one. So you can pick out your approach.

Is thither a subject you truly like in schooltime?

I've forever liked English. I've done very much of poetry and essay piece of writing. I actually compose about fencing sometimes. So it's a really superb set out for me to say how I sense most convinced situations.

What other do you set to decompress?

I do saltation. [Information technology]  is another retail store for me, because I sense very free in terpsichore. When I fence I feel like I'm beingness very precise and accurate, which I like, but in combining with dance I feel a proportion.
